STEVE McQUEEN
Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen represents Britain this year at the 53rd Venice Biennale. For his exhibition in the British Pavilion, McQueen presents a new film entitled Giardini, inspired by the area of Venice where the Pavilion is situated.

'It is important for me to create a still moment in the biennale, particularly because this is a work with a beginning, a middle and an end.'
Steve McQueen, June 2009

For McQueen's new film, Giardini, the source material is to be found in the respective histories of the Giardini Pubblici and the Biennale, which reflect on empire, political upheaval and nationhood dating back over two hundred years.

“I’m not interested in all that nonsense,” he spits, when I ask him whether he thinks that Hunger has opened more doors for him as an artist. “It’s all about the work. W. O. R. K. When people look at my work in Venice, I don’t want them to think: ‘This is by the guy that made that film. No, no, no, no, no. I want to be judged on the work and the work alone, not work from the past, or could be doing in the future. No. You don’t have to know anything about me – I’m uninterested in that. End of story.” ( Steve McQueen:)
